Getting to know Jesus
Well, I was about eleven years old when I was baptized. I did it for all the wrong reasons. First, I wanted my dad to be happy. I also wanted to eat those cool little crackers and drink the grape juice for the mid-service snack time the church calls communion. I was so lost. It took a grip of wake up calls for me to get the message of who Jesus really is...... let's just say I'm lucky to be alive. Anyways, I know all of you at one point or another have heard the quintessential testimony that ends with "happily ever after," but I'm not here to give you that. Let me tell you, following Jesus is the hardest thing in life to do....it's also the best. My awesome friend and bandmate Channon Shidaki once told me that, "If you're not taking hits in life, then you're probably on the wrong team." Wow!! I just wanted to pass that along as an encouragement to all of you who are struggling in life. I slip up everyday and it sucks, but the message of the cross is that we can be free from our sins. Jesus paid the price in full so that we can have eternal life for free. I guess you could say that means no down payment for life...or....Nothing Down. Music
At seven years old I took piano lessons. I was born partially deaf and the doctors thought it would be a good idea if I took up playing an instrument of some kind to help me hear certain sounds. I took piano lessons for about seven and a half years, and I still can't sight read worth a bean. The cool thing is I can play just about anything from memory. If I hear it, gimme a few minutes and I'll figure it out. That's my mutant power. To make an incredibly long story short, I got a guitar when I was fifteen. I never took lessons because I wanted to learn all by myself. I did, however buy chord books and the like. I thought I was the man because I knew all the major and minor chords and I could switch them without thinking about it...hey, it's pretty good for someone who knows nothing but piano. I later met Channon Shidaki who listened to Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Steve Vai. Ooooh! I could go off about these guys forever. They are the lords of the guitar. There are also a few more lads who fall under that categorie, ie: Joe Satriani, and George Lynch. (I'd be more than happy to debate this with anyone.) Channon introduced me to a whole new world of guitaring with boundless possibilities. Man!! I remember when our band (Tim, Channon, and myself) first got together and jammed. Channon was rippin' it up! He would scale all over that neck. He even showed me how to do a few things!! I was so happy. I borrowed all the Van Halen albums I could from Tim (he has 'em all.) and all their 1983 US tour boot-leg video. I would sit and stare at Eddie and try to pick up all his licks. Eventually, I did. And I was stoked. I thought I was the man yet again. Untill.....Channon showed me this album (Steve Vai's Alien Love Secrets) where this guy makes a horsie sound with his guitar!! Holy Moly!! So I listened to that thing non-stop. Anyway, every time that I thought I was the man at guitar, Channon always had some new guitarist that he would show me to burst my bubble. Believe me, my poor bubble has been ravaged and torn asunder.
