- Accepting Jesus
- I'd always believed in the existance of God. Yet, I was
never willing to go to church. I wasn't really raised in
a Christian lifesyle, but believing in God was never
discouraged in my life. In the sixth grade I met one of
my best friends in the world, Jason Sluyter. It was
pretty apparant that he was one of those church goers. He
never really forced Jesus on me. He just lived a good
example of what it was to love Jesus. I would always ask
him stupid questions about God. He would just laugh and
answer most of them with "I don't know." He sort of made
me decide that one day I would go to church. It wasn't
until after high school that I finaly decided to attend
church. Actually, my girlfriend at the time made me go.
The thing is, although I was told to go, I had an open mind
about the situation. It wasn't long until I felt Jesus
call me into his ministry. I was baptized in Jesus at the
age of nineteen by Jason.
- Past Bands
- I haven't played in a lot of bands, but I've had my share
of them. The first one I was in was called CKK&K. It
stood for Channon, Kealohi, Keli'i and Kyle. It was a
contemporary Hawaiian band made up of me and three of my
cousins. We seemed to mostly play for family weddings and
a few other gigs. I was originaly taught to play Hawaiian
music, but I love rock. So a few of my high school
friends and I started a rock band called 'Joe's Electric
Underwear.' We played a few semi-successful gigs,
but nothing much. After high school I ran into some
scheduling differences and creative conflicts with
the others in the band and decided to resign as the lead
guitarist of 'JEU.'
- Praise Bands
- A friend of mine, Jason Sluyter, asked me if I wanted to
play in a youth praise band at Lawndale Christian Church.
I thought about it and came to the conclusion that it
would be a good chance to broaden my guitaring expertise.
I didn't except Christ as my savior yet ... it was just a
good experience to play guitar. That's where I met Tim
Anderson, who played drums for the youth band. Later the
Youth Pastor resigned and the band broke up. About 2
years later I get a call from Tim asking me if I wanted
to re-form the youth band. Sure! Another chance to play
guitar. Later, this band blossomed into Nothing Down.
Having finaly excepted Christ about three years ago. I
have been anticipating rejoining the youth band that is
re-re-starting at Lawndale Church, but with college it's
gonna be tough. If God wants it, it will be.
- Nothing Down
- Nothing Down ... I must admit ... was a vision of Tim
Anderson. I met Tim at Lawndale Christian Church, where
he was the drummer for the youth band. After the youth
band broke up I didn't see or hear from Tim for about two
years. Suddenly out of the Blue Tim calls me up asking me
if I wanted to help him re-start the youth band.
Unfortunately the band didn't last very long. Tim had
other plans. One day Tim suggested that we form a band
that would perform rock music. I loved rock and was all
for it. So we got one of the other guitarists in the
youth band, Dave Maciel, and the basist, Jason Gastellum
and decided to give it a shot. We later added Shawn
Alvira as our lead singer. Shawn sang for Tim on our
first gig, when Tim was the drummer and lead singer.
(Tim had a hard time singing and playing the drums at
the same time.) Since then, we felt it was our calling to
be a Christian rock band. It made sense! We did start as
a praise band.
- Jesus
- Jesus is the first on this list and first in my life. For
all of you who don't know how to get to heaven, Jesus is
the only way. If you accept the fact that he was the son
of God that died for your sins, It's a one way ticket.
Anything else is a one way ticket elsewhere.
- Guitaring
- I actually started by playing the ukulele when I was
about thirteen. (An ukulele is a smaller version of a
guitar, with only four strings, that originated in
Hawai'i.) I was taught to play, along with the rest of my
cousins, by my Aunty Pi'i. It wasn't until I was a junior
in high school that my aunt felt that it was time to
graduate to guitar. I was taught to play Hawaiian music,
but I loved rock. I listened to Metalica & Queen and
would try to play along with them. It's been about 5
years since then, and now my goal is to master this
instument. My guitaring influences include Steve Vai,
Yngwie Malmsteen, and Eddie Van Halen. With guys like
that to compete with I've got a lot of work to do.

- Video Games
- For some reason I just can't seem to grow out of video
games. I find myself enthralled by the graphics, the
characters, the stories, and the sheer fun of playing
them. It all started when my cousins gave me their Atari
in the early 80's. Nowadays the games are like
controllable movies. Some of my favorite games include
'Metal Gear Solid', 'Final Fantasy 7', 'Mega Man 2', and
'Panzer Dragoon Zwei.'
